Double Glazing on the Web?

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Would you buy double glazing online? With the wonders of EBay, Amazon and Freecycle online, there are few material items in this world that technology and a large credit card limit can’t buy you.

I certainly wouldn’t advocate purchasing frames and or glazing through the internet and having a crack installing them yourself, but there is a lot that can be said for double glazing online. For one thing you neatly sidestep the intrusive salesman who comes into your home and tries to sell you features you don’t need. By cutting out this stage, you would also cunningly avoid the inflated costs glazing firms mark up on their products in order to pay for said intrusive salesman.

Wouldn’t it be great, once you’ve decided to replace windows or doors or even by a conservatory, if you could take some brief measurements and contact a glazing company who would quite happily take you through their products, but not send anyone to you home except the a surveyor? That for me would be the real highlight of being able to buy Double Glazing on the Web.

Too Early for Patio Doors?

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Ok, so there’s frost on the ground, it’s dark at 4:30pm and there’s talk of more snow… You could be forgiven for not putting those new patio doors at the top of your priority list.  In fact if you’re anything like me, you don’t so much as venture into the back garden between October and May, but trust me, come the odd day or two of British summertime, you’ll wish you’d planned ahead!

Picture it now; smart new double glazed patio doors leading directly onto your lawn.  This year you’ll enjoy serene evenings with just the summer breeze and the sound of the dusk symphony from the song thrush.  You can be looking out through your patio doors at the frosty mornings, the drizzled afternoons and the snowy winter evenings whilst enjoying all the extra heat that you may have been losing before choosing double glazing.

The rate this year is flying by, summer will be here before you know it… better get stuck in on the weeding then!

New Years Resolution? Try New Windows and Doors…

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Make ‘saving money’ your New Years Resolution with these top tips on slashing your energy bills!

Don’t waste energy….keep the heat in; preserve your heat with double glazed windows and cavity wall insulation where possible.  Thick or heavy curtains and draft excluders also make a huge difference and can reduce heat lost through windows and doors.  According to Energywatch, by turning your thermostat down by just one degree centigrade could cut your heating bills by 10 per cent.  Finally, simple things such as energy saving light bulbs, not using standby on your electrical items and turning off lights when you leave the room can also make a difference.

Look Online…..if you’re considering switching your supplier, new cheap utility deals are constantly being launched online and most of the cheapest tariffs on the market can only be taken advantage of by internet customers.  Many new deals even offer cash-back.

Monitor your meter…..if you receive an estimated bill from your supplier; make sure you aren’t paying too much or too little!  Where possible, give a meter reading to your supplier.  This will avoid a large bill landing on the doormat or a large increase on your direct debit.

If your home isn’t already double glazed, be sure to look out for credit-crunching energy saving deals on windows and doors in the New Year!

Double Glazing: cheaper and easier online

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Did you know that overheads such as advertising, showrooms and general marketing can up the purchase price of your double glazing by up to 10 times?  Catch your breath a minute and read on for some good news!

The answer you are looking for folks: Internet sales; same quality, but with fewer people to pay in the chain.  If you buy your windows and doors direct from the manufacturer you can cut out the middle men and their overheads.  Fact: double glazing is cheaper online, and more importantly you are in charge of the facts.  The prices that you see are the prices that you pay.  ‘Now where did I put that tape measure …?’

The benefits of double glazing are substantial.  Primarily for reducing heat loss, but also noise pollution and condensation are significantly reduced.  Remember, saving on heat loss means saving on your energy bills.  For all you green readers, you will know that this in turn benefits the environment.  By reducing the energy you use at home, you are actively working to decrease your ‘CO2 footprint’.  Give yourself a pat on the back; your double glazing is helping to save the planet!

Online retailers are continually crunching down the cost of improving your home online, so remember that it’s not just windows and doors you can make a saving on…..go on, live dangerously and get those yellow curtains and scatter cushions to match!

HIP – Home Information Pack

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Conscientious approach to buying and selling homes or bureaucratic complication imposed by a nanny-state? As from April 6th 2009 anyone selling a house must possess a Home Information Pack prior to marketing.

In Green terms, the HIP pack is crucial. The inclusion of an Energy Performance Certificate is expected to considerably influence people’s decisions when buying a home. Even if buyers are not environmentally conscientious, the impact a property’s energy rating has on heating/running costs, should certainly feature highly when accessing a purchase price.

The HIP provides proof as to whether or not a home is well heated and well insulated; if it’s not, then it’s very likely to affect the property’s price.  It is estimated that without double glazing, a property will achieve around £5,000 less than the market value. Put simply, to get the best market value a property will need to be double glazed.

Whether they will have any effect, other than raising the blood pressure of potential sellers;  HIP’s are with us for the indefinite future.  Click here for more information.

I hope you haven’t enjoyed the silence too much…

Changing servers is never without its problems but we think that they’re all sorted now, so its time to recommence our regular chats.

As my grey cells are rapidly dying off, it will take a little time for me to remember exactly where we had got to.  Should have done that by tomorrow, when I’ll try to post something a little more intellectual.  Until then - enjoy this cold weather.
